At Brazilian Top Team Austin, our No-Gi grappling program offers a unique and exciting approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on techniques and strategies that differ from traditional Gi training. No-Gi grappling is practiced without the traditional kimono, which means relying on grips, speed, and fluid transitions rather than using the fabric for control. This style emphasizes athleticism, adaptability, and creative technique, making it a fantastic addition to any martial artist’s training routine. No-Gi grappling has gained significant popularity in recent years, both for its applications in mixed martial arts (MMA) and as a competitive discipline of its own.
Our No-Gi classes at BTT Austin are designed to provide a well-rounded grappling experience, blending aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and submission grappling. Under the guidance of our experienced instructors, students learn key concepts like controlling an opponent without grips, quick positional changes, and effective submissions. These techniques are essential for those looking to cross-train for MMA or simply want to expand their BJJ skill set. Our curriculum is accessible to all levels, so whether you're brand new to grappling or an experienced BJJ practitioner, our No-Gi program provides an invaluable opportunity to challenge yourself and grow. Training No-Gi at BTT Austin is also an excellent way to sharpen your overall game by developing better body awareness and balance, which translates back to traditional Gi training as well. Our No-Gi classes foster a supportive environment where students can explore this dynamic style while building strength, agility, and mental resilience. With a mix of drilling, live rolling, and situational sparring, each session is crafted to ensure that students leave feeling more skilled and confident. If you're in the Austin, Cedar Park, or Round Rock area and interested in learning No-Gi grappling, we invite you to come experience the energy and excitement of our classes at Brazilian Top Team Austin!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an incredible martial art for children, providing them with skills and confidence that last a lifetime. At Brazilian Top Team Austin, our kids’ BJJ classes focus on building strength, coordination, and agility through engaging exercises and drills. BJJ is a full-body workout that helps young practitioners develop balance, body awareness, and flexibility in a fun and supportive environment. This physical activity not only keeps kids healthy but also instills in them the importance of fitness from a young age, setting the stage for a healthier lifestyle as they grow.
Beyond physical benefits, BJJ also fosters emotional growth and resilience in children. Our classes teach kids how to overcome challenges, handle frustration, and develop patience as they learn new techniques. BJJ emphasizes problem-solving and encourages children to think strategically, both on and off the mat. This teaches them to stay calm under pressure, which is a valuable skill in academics, sports, and everyday situations. At BTT Austin, our instructors prioritize creating a positive environment where kids feel safe and supported, which helps build their self-esteem and emotional strength. One of the most impactful benefits of BJJ for kids is the boost in confidence and social skills. Training in BJJ requires teamwork, respect, and good communication, which helps children learn to work with others and make friends in a structured environment. As they progress and earn new belts, kids experience a strong sense of accomplishment, which reinforces their confidence and motivates them to keep growing. Parents often see their children develop better focus, discipline, and a sense of responsibility, which are qualities that benefit them well into adulthood. Enrolling your child in BJJ at BTT Austin provides them with a foundation of skills and confidence that will support their physical, emotional, and social development. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) belt system is a unique journey that reflects not only a student’s technical progress but also their personal growth and commitment to the art. At Brazilian Top Team Austin, we emphasize that each belt represents a stage in the BJJ journey, where both skills and mindset evolve with each level. Unlike many martial arts, BJJ’s belt progression is known for its rigor and dedication, taking years of consistent effort to achieve each promotion. Each belt level holds specific significance and teaches valuable lessons, both on and off the mat, as practitioners continue to grow and improve.
The white belt is where every journey begins, marking the stage of learning foundational techniques, basic movements, and positional understanding. White belts focus on core skills such as escapes, guard positions, and balance, laying the groundwork for more advanced techniques. At this stage, students learn how to stay calm, respect their training partners, and approach the complexities of BJJ with a beginner’s mindset. White belt is a period of exploration and discovery, where students embrace the learning curve and develop resilience through consistent training and overcoming initial challenges. The blue belt represents a major milestone and is often seen as a mark of commitment. Blue belts have gained proficiency in fundamental techniques and begin to understand their preferred styles and positions. This stage introduces more advanced concepts like sweeps, guard passing, and submissions, and blue belts start to think more strategically. The mindset at blue belt is one of perseverance and curiosity; practitioners have learned enough to experiment, troubleshoot, and refine their game while focusing on improving weaknesses. This level tests dedication, as it takes persistence to continue evolving beyond the basics and become comfortable with the sport’s intricacies. The purple belt is an advanced rank, often considered a turning point in the BJJ journey, where practitioners transition from learning techniques to developing mastery. Purple belts possess a deep understanding of techniques, timing, and leverage, and can fluidly adapt their game to various situations. This level is about creativity and honing one’s unique style, allowing practitioners to express their personality and strengths through their BJJ. At purple belt, students are expected to begin helping others with their progress, and the mindset shifts to one of responsibility and mentorship, as they become examples to newer students in the gym. Reaching the brown belt marks the final phase before black belt, where practitioners refine their techniques and sharpen their game to a high level of precision. Brown belts have a comprehensive understanding of BJJ and focus on perfecting techniques, tightening control, and anticipating an opponent’s movements. This stage is about finesse and preparing for the ultimate goal of black belt, and it’s often a time of self-reflection. The mindset of a brown belt is one of humility and patience; they know the importance of continued learning and are committed to embodying the values of BJJ as they prepare to transition into the role of a black belt and beyond. Earning a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a profound accomplishment that reflects years of dedication, resilience, and personal growth. At Brazilian Top Team Austin, we see the black belt not just as a measure of technical skill but as a symbol of perseverance and character. It often takes a decade or more of consistent training, overcoming challenges, and refining technique to reach this level. A black belt in BJJ embodies a deep understanding of the art, both physically and mentally, and a commitment to continual learning and improvement. It’s not only a mastery of techniques but a journey that fosters humility, discipline, and respect. For many, earning a black belt is the beginning of a new chapter in BJJ, where teaching, mentoring, and sharing knowledge become the next step in the journey. Each belt represents a new chapter, and at BTT Austin, we are proud to support students at every stage of this rewarding journey. Congratulations to all those leveling up this weekend. Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an exciting journey, and having the right gear can make a big difference in both comfort and performance. At Brazilian Top Team Austin, we recommend a few essential items that every beginner should have to kickstart their training. The Gi is the most fundamental piece of gear for BJJ and is typically required for classes. A Gi consists of a jacket, pants, and a belt, and it should fit snugly but comfortably. Look for durable fabrics that can withstand the rigors of grappling and frequent washes. Most gyms, including ours, have specific color or style requirements, so be sure to check before purchasing. We have a team store on the fuji website, as well as gis in stock in our gym store. A properly fitted Gi not only enhances your comfort during training but also allows you to practice grip techniques effectively.
For No-Gi BJJ and extra comfort under the Gi, our team rash guards are essential. These compression shirts prevent skin irritation and reduce the risk of mat burns, making them a great addition to your gear. Rash guards also wick away sweat, helping to keep you cool and comfortable during intense training sessions. Many students at BTT Austin choose to wear rash guards under their Gi as well, as it adds an extra layer of hygiene and protection. Additionally, mouthguards are a must-have to protect your teeth and jaw from accidental impacts, particularly during sparring sessions. Custom-fitted mouthguards offer the best protection, but there are also high-quality over-the-counter options that provide solid coverage and comfort. Beyond these essentials, a few other items can enhance your training experience. Athletic tape is helpful for supporting fingers and toes, which can sometimes feel the strain of gripping and grappling. Water bottles are a simple but necessary addition to stay hydrated throughout training, especially in intense sessions. Lastly, a gym bag to keep all your gear organized and clean makes getting ready for class more convenient. At Brazilian Top Team Austin, we’re here to help you with any questions on gear and can recommend trusted brands that will stand the test of time. Starting with the right essentials will help you feel more prepared and focused, allowing you to get the most out of your training. The recent IBJJF Pan American Championships were an incredible showcase of dedication, skill, and teamwork for Brazilian Top Team Austin. Also, Congratulations to our competitors who put in their time, energy, and effort, and did not see the podium. It's a huge accomplishment to get out there and even try. This year’s Pan American Championships have reinforced the importance of hard work, discipline, and team support, which are core values at Brazilian Top Team Austin. The event has energized our team, and we’re already back on the mats, refining our techniques and setting new goals. We look forward to even greater achievements in future competitions and are confident that the skills and camaraderie we continue to build will lead to continued success.
